Access to Upwork is encrypted using Transport Layer Security (TLS) and for any sensitive information you provide, such as tax information, we encrypt the transmission of that information using Secure Socket Layer (SSL) technology.

Identity Verification
As part of our efforts to keep Upwork safe, secure, and fraud-free, we periodically ask users to go through identity checks. When you’re asked to verify your identity, you’ll need to add a photo of a government ID (driver’s license, passport, etc.). Additionally, you may be asked to have a brief video call with us.
Access to your personal information
Access to the information you provide during identity verification is reserved exclusively for trusted Upwork agents and our secure third-party vendor. The vendor does not store any of that data, and after 30 days, Upwork deletes the image you submitted to verify your identity. Clients will be able to see that you have undergone the verification process from the Identity Verified badge only, and will not have access to your personal information. We do not otherwise share any of the personal information you submit to us for verification purposes or any other reason.
